Thanks for the reminder: I had forgotten about Bronowski. I was a big fan of "The Ascent of Man" when it was on PBS in the '70s. Will have to see if I can stream it somewhere.

Also, too: Pretty sure I have ancestors who came from Lodz. Of course, mine were from the uncircumsized tribe, so their history and experiences were somewhat different. Which didn't prevent the Nazis from abducting my mother in 1939 and sending her to a work farm in Austria.

Last week was the conscience of inequality, this week is an example of Man's lucid higher aspirations. It's a pity that there aren't more of them; a LOT more!

"The Ascent of Man" is one of the most impressive books I've ever read -- a brilliant meditation on life in all its aspects, both those transcendent and those that are concrete. Time to reread it now! I recall sending it as a graduation gift to a Xian fundie cousin who was studying to be a medical professional, since I thought it would help her reconcile her chosen career with her religious upbringing. Not sure if she ever read it, but my sending it certainly upset our parents (hers because of the book's content, mine because they deemed the gift an unnecessary offense). My cousin and I have never been especially close, so I have no idea whether Bronowski's work was offensive to or difficult for her -- but I do hope she gave it a look. Everyone should!
