Week 106 of our regular morning feature here at Friedman of the Plains Worldwide in which we highlight the great words and works of great men and women, as well as those who are insufferable, delusional, and even fictional.
This Week Iris Murdoch
“Those who hope, by retiring from the world, to earn a holiday from human frailty, in themselves and others, are usually disappointed.” — The Bell
Did Iris Murdoch write The Bell Jar? Using the same title as Sylvia Plath did? If so, one of their publishers wasn’t very diligent. I’d look this up, but I have many other Substacks to read, including your other ones. I read this one first every morning to gain some perspective in these wretched days.
Iris is right. You've dug your hole, found your desert island. You go to the bathroom and there's the fucking mirror... frailty enframed.
