Portugal, with the insistence of Chega, the rightwing party now the second most popular in the country, passed legislation, joining other EU nations, in banning burqas (a full-body garment that covers a woman from head to foot) and niqabs (the full-face Islamic veil with space around the eyes) from being worn in most public places, though face veils would still be allowed in airplanes, diplomatic premises and places of worship. The European Court of Human Rights has approved such bans under certain circumstances as long as they are “strictly necessary.” . . .
