It was an illuminating and troubling night at Circle Cinema, moderating a discussion about ithaka, the documentary about the struggle of Julian Assange’s family to end his incarceration in a maximum security prison in London and to prevent his extradition to the United States on espionage charges. Gabriel Shipton, Julian’s brother and film’s producer, and Michael Mason, former editor of This Land Press, joined me for a talk about what happens to free speech and ultimately to freedom when journalists are threatened and imprisoned for publishing truth. (Michael said he once was visited by attorneys in Tulsa who cautioned him against even thinking about pursuing a story.)
