A Friend of the Shebeen Has Some News

Let us all bid a fond farewell to Friedman of the Plains and greet warmly our new contributor, Friedman of the Algarve.

This is a shebeen special report. Our man on the scene in the sand, Friedman of the Plains, is relocating with the lovely Melissa to Portugal. I trust I don’t have to elaborate on the importance he’s meant to this project, almost from the grand opening in 2011. But an even greater gift has been his friendship, which is vast and encompassing. One of the highlights of my 2024 was finally meeting him IRL, as the kidz say. I was in N.Y.C. covering the Trump-Riefenstahl-fest at Madison Square Garden. We repaired to a bistro on 33rd Street after it became clear that nobody else was going to be allowed into the arena. Our conversation sprawled, as all great conversations do. I will treasure that afternoon for a very long time.

I have been promised that his regular Thursday contribution will continue, albeit on an intercontinental basis. So let us all bid a fond farewell to Friedman of the Plains and greet warmly our new contributor, Friedman of the Algarve.
